Disneyland

Background History

Disneyland was built on 160 acres of land in Anaheim, California using a total of $17 million. Originally, it was supposed to be an 8-acre park for Walt Disney's family and employees, but while World War II held up his plans, Walt Disney came up with new ideas and decided to make the park on more land. Construction started 12 months before it was schedued to open on July 17, 1955. Disneyland is divided into five different sections. The first one is Main Street, U.S.A., Adventurland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland. To raise money for Disneyland, Disney made television shows like "Walt Disney's Disneyland" and "The Mickey Mouse Club" so people would support his project.

Opening day for Disney was disastrous. For the Grand Opening, 6000 tickets were sent as invitations, but that day, there were 28000 people who stormed the park, claiming to have tickets. Most of these were fake though but they were still admitted into the park. There were terrible conditions that day like the temperature being over 100 degrees, the asphalt still being wet, water pipes not producing water, food and water running out, and one of the rides breaking down due to too many passengers. Disney only shut down for the whole day three unscheduled times. The day after John F. Kennedy was killed was the first day, the Northridge Earthquake in 1994 was the second time the park closed to make sure everything was safe, and the third time was on 9/11.
